People type some version of this into Google every day: can a certified hypnotherapist actually help with stress? The honest answer is "often, for the right kind of stress, inside clear limits." This post explains what a certified hypnotherapist (CHt) does, where that work fits, and where it doesn't, so you can decide before you spend a dollar.
It's written by the team at Identity 2.0 Hypnotherapy in Dallas, where Jay Shaw works 1:1 with driven executives, founders, traders and athletes. Jay is a certified hypnotherapist (CHt). He is not a psychologist, counselor or medical provider, and that difference matters for the rest of this article.
The Short Answer
Yes, for everyday performance stress. The tight chest before a board meeting, the rushed decision after a red morning on the screens, the first tee that feels nothing like the range. These are reactions to specific situations, and changing how you respond in those moments is exactly what CHt work is built for.
No, as a replacement for mental-health care. A CHt doesn't diagnose or treat anxiety disorders, depression, trauma or any medical condition. If stress has tipped into something that runs your life, a licensed professional is the right first call. Hypnotherapy can sometimes sit alongside that care, with your provider in the loop.
Stress vs. Anxiety: Why the Line Matters
The National Institute of Mental Health draws a useful distinction. Stress is generally a response to an external cause, like a big test or an argument, and it usually goes away once the situation is resolved. Anxiety is more internal: a persistent feeling of apprehension or dread that can show up even when there's no immediate threat. (NIMH, "I'm So Stressed Out!" fact sheet)
NIMH also lists warning signs that it may be time for more help: when the symptoms interfere with everyday life, cause you to avoid things, or seem to be always present. If that sounds like you, start with your doctor or a licensed therapist. If you are in crisis or thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Most people who contact Identity 2.0 are describing the first kind: a stress response tied to specific, high-stakes moments that they want to handle differently.
What "Certified Hypnotherapist" Actually Means
Search results mix several titles together: hypnotist, hypnotherapist, "certified clinical hypnotherapist," psychologist who uses hypnosis. They aren't the same thing.
- A certified hypnotherapist (CHt) has completed training and certification through a hypnotherapy school or association. Jay Shaw's CHt comes from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute (HMI), where he graduated with honors. This is a training credential, not a license to practice psychology or medicine.
- A licensed psychologist, counselor or physician who uses hypnosis is working under a state license, can diagnose, and may bill insurance. That's a different service.
Neither is "better" in the abstract. The right choice depends on what you're dealing with. For a closer comparison, read hypnosis vs. therapy.

In plain terms, hypnosis is a focused, relaxed state in which it's easier to rehearse a new response. Nothing is done to you. You stay aware and in control, and you can stop at any time.
At Identity 2.0, stress work usually follows one specific pattern rather than "stress in general":
- Find the moment. Not "work is stressful," but the exact trigger: the second loss of the day, the investor question you dread, the three-foot putt with something on the line.
- Map the sequence. What you notice first, the story that follows, what your body does, and what you do next. Most people have never slowed this down.
- Rehearse a new response. In a focused, relaxed state, you walk through the moment and practice responding the way the version of you that performs best would respond.
- Reinforce it between sessions. Short audio and simple drills so the new response holds up in real conditions, not just in the chair.
This is the core idea behind Identity 2.0: lasting change sticks when it's built into how you see yourself, not just what you try to do. A trader who thinks "I'm someone who stays with my plan" behaves differently after a loss than one who is white-knuckling a rule. See what Identity 2.0 is for the full approach.
What the Evidence Says (and Doesn't)
Be wary of anyone who promises guaranteed calm. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes that hypnosis has been studied for a number of conditions. For anxiety related to medical or dental procedures, for example, it says some studies have shown promising results but the overall evidence is not conclusive. (NCCIH, "Hypnosis: What You Need To Know")
That's why Jay frames this work as performance coaching for goals you choose, not treatment. The measure isn't a diagnosis improving. It's whether you handle the moments you named differently, by your own account.
Who This Tends to Fit
- Athletes and golfers whose practice game doesn't show up in competition. See performance hypnosis for athletes.
- Traders whose stress shows up as revenge trades, hesitation or cutting winners early. See trading psychology hypnosis.
- Founders and executives who carry pressure into every meeting and every night. See executive hypnosis and hypnosis for entrepreneurs.
Some clients also add Identity Under Pressure, an optional heart-rhythm biofeedback add-on that gives you something to practice with between sessions. Jay is a HeartMath Certified Practitioner. It's an add-on, not a requirement, and it's covered on the call if it's relevant to you.
Who Should Start Somewhere Else
A CHt is not the right first stop if you're experiencing panic attacks, persistent low mood, thoughts of self-harm, trauma symptoms, substance dependence, or stress with physical symptoms that haven't been checked by a doctor. Start with your physician or a licensed mental-health professional. If you're already in care and want to add hypnotherapy, talk with your provider first. Jay will ask about this on the free call.
